MTSI is searching for a Sr. Mission Systems Engineer/Space SME to support development of first-of-kind space vehicles and missions.  This handpicked candidate must possess technical expertise and experience with developing, designing, building, and integrating aerospace mission computer hardware and software.  In this position, you will provide System Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) to a Government program office established for development and fielding of critical capabilities for the space enterprise.

Chief Mission Systems Engineer responsibilities span technology domains including space rated hardware, software, sensors, and processors in an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment.  You will be required to resolve previously unsolved challenges with creative and innovative solutions in your areas of expertise, while performing independently at the highest levels of subject-matter expertise.  You will serve as a core point of contact for industry and work directly with subject matter experts across the space domain to quickly converge on solutions that meet warfighter requirements.  You must apply advanced principles, theories, and concepts for highly classified and SWAP-C constrained systems, while also effectively communicating complex results with management and executive leadership. 

  • Independently define, assist, advise, or guide issue resolution or projects
  • Employ highly specialized knowledge or experience to anticipate problems
  • Conceptualize guiding strategic principles, and identify adaptable technologies to solutions for complex challenges
  • Conduct technical analyses and risk assessment in an accelerated acquisition framework
  • Decompose capabilities into core system functional architecture
  • Provide recommendations and/or make decisions on technical approaches of the total system, and system-of-systems definition, design, or development
  • Lead improvements to program progress, technical soundness, and timeliness
  • Manage related market research, R&D studies, and analysis
  • Provide accurate technical guidance, direction, and advice and perform technical reviews within the organization in a timely and effective manner
  • Evaluate mission concepts of core processor designs against mission requirements, including detailed performance analysis of subsystems
  • Lead system engineering and technical program management with cross-functional teams across various contract vehicles and mission partners
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy both orally and in writing

For this SETA position, located full-time in Albuquerque, NM, you will provide technical assistance to program management to expeditiously advance United States space capabilities.  An ideal candidate has a strong technical background in air-domain mission computer functional architecture(s), as well as knowledge of spacecraft subsystems with particular depth in command & data handling, spacecraft operations, and system knowledge of both space and terrestrial domains.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum ten (10) years of relevant classified DoD work experience
  • Five (5) years of experience with hardware and software development in mission computers, command and data handlers, and sensor suites for autonomous air or space domain mission systems
  • Experience in spacecraft, launch vehicles, or highly autonomous unmanned systems
  • Expertise in sensor suite system architecture and analysis with subject matter expertise in EO/IR sensors
  • Proven experience integrating subsystems such as sensor suites, PNT, survivability, and network communications into systems to achieve desired effects
  • Knowledge of space electronics development and standards
  • Experience with ground mission planning architecture and software
  • Experience in planning and executing test campaigns for space mission systems
  • Experience in DoD program management that spans the Defense Acquisition System, from initial program development through sustainment and disposal
  • Knowledge of DAS and LCM (DoDI 5000.02 and AFI 63-101/20-101)
  • Experience in DoD program management that spans initial program development through sustainment and disposal
  • Experience with Integrated Master Schedules, PPBE process, and Risk Management
  • Experience with preparation of Statements of Work (SOW) and Performance Work Statements (PWS)

Desired Qualifications

  • Ten (10) years of relevant SAR/RSV and/or SCI work experience
  • System Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) to Government program office
  • Demonstrated knowledge of embedded software for autonomous space operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payload functionality and interface
  • Demonstrated technical program management in space or air systems
  • Experience with joint targeting (F2T2EA) doctrine and analysis
  • Experience integrating data link and onboard data to meet mission needs
  • Experience leading software algorithm development teams
  • Experience in designing EO/IR sensors to support space-to-space missions (i.e. rendezvous and proximity operations)
  • Experience using multivariable optimization in mission planning software systems

Education - Minimum Qualifications:

  • An advanced engineering degree, such as a Masters, or a PhD is preferred from an ABET accredited institution, with major/focus in physics, aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering

Education - Desired Qualifications & Experience:

  • Relevant PhD degree plus minimum 5 years of related mission system experience, OR
  • Relevant Master of Science, physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering degree plus minimum of 10 years of related mission system experience, OR
  • Relevant Bachelor's degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering plus minimum of 20 years of related mission system experience

Clearance Requirements: Current TS/SCI (SCI eligibility) with SAR/RSV experience within last 5 years, and candidate must maintain a TS/SCI clearance as a condition of employment.  


Location/Travel Requirements:  Full-time, on site in vicinity of Kirtland AFB, NM, and will require travel up to 20% of time within the continental United States.
